The bus bandwidth required can be achieved by using parallel data transfer, either byte or word (multiple bytes) or single bit serial. A Multibit wide data buss would require more pins on the I.C. or the added complexity of multiplexing. The route chosen by Philips uses two wires/pins one for the data and the other for a clock (three if the 0-volt return is included) and is serial in its mode of operation.
