What is the I²C bus ?

The I²C bus was developed by the Philips company to provide a simple method of allowing individual integrated circuits (I.C.) to control and respond to one another using message datagrams.

For example a home entertainment system with TV, radio tuner, DVD, amplifier and recorder may be implemented using a number of integrated circuits, each providing certain functionality.
